Chedraui contributes to advancing sustainable seafood and aquaculture in Mexico

Increasingly, what we choose at the supermarket can make a meaningful difference for the environment. In this context, Chedraui continues to take steps to offer seafood from more responsible sources, achieving important progress in collaboration with SmartFish A.C.

As part of this effort, in 2025 the company updated its Sustainable Fish and Aquaculture Purchasing Policy, prioritizing key elements such as traceability and the availability of sustainable products from suppliers. This update builds on a commitment launched in 2020, when Chedraui became the first supermarket chain in Latin America to adopt a sourcing policy to improve the sustainability of the seafood products it offers to its customers.

One of the key milestones in this journey has been the steady increase in environmentally certified products. According to the latest seafood portfolio analysis, the share of certified products has increased by 47% over the past three years.

These efforts are already being recognized across the sector. In the From the Sea to the Supermarket report, Chedraui improved its score from 5.97 in 2023 to 7.2 in 2025, ranking as the second retailer in Mexico in terms of commitment to sustainable seafood. Through its collaboration with fishing cooperatives, such as the Progreso Cooperative in Baja California Sur, Chedraui has helped open new market opportunities for local fishing organizations, strengthening the connection between small-scale fisheries and the people who enjoy their products.

The path to sustainability is ongoing, but Chedraui’s progress shows that change is possible—and that our everyday purchasing decisions can help protect our oceans.
