Agostaderos de Topón Cooperative receives First Place in the 2026 National Sustainable Fisheries and Aquaculture Awards
The fishing cooperative Agostaderos de Topón earned First Place in the Small-Scale Commercial Fishing Category of the 2026 National Sustainable Fisheries and Aquaculture Awards, one of the country’s most important recognitions for the fisheries sector.
This award recognizes years of work to strengthen the cooperative’s organization, improve seafood quality and traceability, and create greater economic opportunities for fishing families in the region. Through collective effort, innovation, and strong leadership, Agostaderos de Topón has become one of the most responsible and competitive fishing organizations in the region.
One of the cooperative’s most recent achievements includes obtaining the SENASICA Certification for Best On-Board Handling Practices. The certification reflects the cooperative’s commitment to seafood quality, food safety, and responsible product handling.
The cooperative also established a seafood processing plant that creates new economic opportunities for families in Topón and neighboring communities. Women from the community play a central role in operating the facility and strengthening the cooperative’s productive capacity. Their participation has opened new spaces for leadership and employment in a sector where men have traditionally occupied most productive roles. Through their work and commitment, they continue helping build a more inclusive and resilient local economy.
In addition, Agostaderos de Topón actively participates in the “La Encrucijada Biosphere Reserve Artisanal White Shrimp – Cast Nets” Fishery Improvement Project. Through this initiative, fishing communities work together to improve fishing practices, strengthen fisheries management, and promote long-term resource conservation.
SmartFish Rescate de Valor AC has accompanied these processes through long-term partnerships grounded in trust, collaborative learning, and the conviction that fishing communities can lead the transition toward more equitable and sustainable seafood systems.
Today, we celebrate this recognition not only as an achievement for one cooperative, but also as an inspiration for many fishing communities across Mexico. Behind this award stand years of teamwork, perseverance, and people who work every day to create a better future for their families and communities.
